a sunrise bridal session on the beach {tampa wedding photographer}
September 26, 2011cabo san lucas wedding pt.3 {cabo azul wedding}
March 16, 2011So a long time ago i ran across this photography company called “Next Exit Photography” and i laughed out loud, somewhat wishing i had come up with that name first because it is SO MY STYLE. i feel like the best locations appear as you’re driving down the road and you see a spot and you just have to take the ‘next exit’ and get back there. i love that spontineity, and it always results in the BEST sessions. those are the types of sessions that cant be planned, cant be scouted, they just happen, and are never able to be repeated again.
As we were driving to downtown Cabo we spotted this old deserted orange building with the thatched roof surrounded by giant cacti and this rustic wooden structure (pictured directly above). we drove down the old dusty drive and Mollie and Tony were such sports battling the prickers, the heat, the sun, and the dirt. amazing people these two are!
And, as soon as it is developed, i’ll also post a little taste of the medium format film i took with my film camera… i can’t wait to see how it turned out!
ps- thanks again to my wonderful assistant and second shooter Angela voell… I literally couldn’t have done it without her! from changing my lenses, helping with lighting, holding veils, taking some great shots, it felt like i was actually in two places at once! you can check out her work at green paint photography , or see some of her own pictures from Cabo on her blog at http://revoellutionaj.blogspot.com/
tour dates announced! 2011
January 17, 2011alright everyone! the tour dates for 2011 have been listed! this is preliminary, of course, since we’re only just halfway into January so far! dates are subject to change, so even if it looks like i will not be in your area on a certain date don’t hesitate to contact me anyway!
i repeat… don’t hesitate to contact me! things change, travel schedules change, etc. but, if it looks like i AM going to be in your area at some point, give me a ring (or an email, you know) and we may be able to set up a shoot. if there is enough interest i may be able to extend my travel dates beyond what i have listed here to do a workshop for photographers, hold classes, do a boudoir marathon, engagement marathon, etc. i’m always up for possibilities!
ps- i’m dying to go to NY (i’ve never been! can you believe that?) or anywhere out of the continental US as well, as i’m feeling a bit itchy for some good culture. if you know of anyone getting married or needing a photo-shoot in any of these areas, by all means, contact me!
pps- are there really only three months out of the year that i’m going to be home? in.sane. go 2011!
Let me just start off by saying that danielle and derek are the type of clients that a photographer hopes for. SO easy going, SO willing to do whatever, and SO appreciative. I always say that I’m not magical, i cant just POOF! create amazing images without the help of my clients. You’ve seen America’s Next Top Model… you know it’s all about both parties… a collaboration between photographer and the person(s) being photographed. and it doesn’t just happen when i get there and we start shooting. it happens well in advance, with consultation meetings, getting to know one another and styles, knowing the location, etc. it’s all the prep work that goes into a wedding before the big day. and Danielle and Derek were awesome. This girl was like “hey, i’ll do whatever. i mean, you want me to stand on that garbage can? SURE! let me just hike this dress up here…..” and in turn i fed off of her excitement and was all “do you think i can scale this wall and get up onto that balcony for a better perspective? i totally think i can. hang on.” and i did. with a little help from Derek (thanks!)
I had so many client inquiries for 10.10.10… and i’m SO happy that i got to photograph danielle and derek’s wedding at Push Ultra Lounge in St. Petersburg. Lets be honest, i couldnt have asked for a better venue. i am a total sucker for exposed brick, uplights, rooftop balconies and gardens…. AH! i loved the warehouse feel, the super old window cranks (check out the ring picture… they are placed on the hardware that opens the giant windows), and all of the interior design and artwork on the ceilings and walls. the thought crossed my mind that maybe if i just stayed in the bathroom after the place shut down that i could make it into a nice little home for myself… and NEVER LEAVE. hmmm convenient…
I had a fabulous time shooting your wedding you guys! thanks for making me feel so comfortable and at home on your big day!
xoxo

Ps… stay tuned for one more wedding on 10.10.10….. my good friend Esther (you’ll remember her from my birth pictures… she photographed Pierson being born!) who is a fellow photographer her in the tampa area got married to her lovely fiance as well on 10.10.10! and i happened to make it to the very end of their reception. dustin (my other half) was filming their entire day on super 8 film, so stay tuned for that as well. the August super 8mm films are coming up soon too! so much so much!
’tis the season!
September 3, 2010happy holidays! Even though it is still a steamy 90 degrees here in Tampa, it is definitely getting time for the holiday season. I had a small panic attack when i realized i was booked for all of October, and then what comes after October but… NOVEMBER. and then… DECEMBER. which, is great if you’re in Elementary school and learning the order of the months, but for me, it struck fear into my heart. i WILL hand knit those stockings that i’ve promised myself for the past three years i was going to do, SO HELP ME. and in the spirit of getting things done early, we are running a wonderful photography special! normally, i am against running “specials” because, well, frankly i feel like a promo ad, and i hate those. so these “specials” are very few and far between. but i do want to motivate my clients to be on the ball this year and be done with that holiday rush early! how amazing is it going to feel to have your photography DONE and your holiday cards DONE before November even rolls around? just think… you could be that person who has their cards sent out by thanksgiving. and by golly…. i am going to be that person this year!
50% off all holiday sessions before October 1st! my entire October is full already, so if you want to do a portrait session, now is definitely the time! and, not only that…. but it seriously gets better. 50% off the set up and design of your holiday cards! normally a $50.00 set up and customization is now just $25.00 to make these beautiful cards personalized to your family. and, these are by far my most favorite holiday cards that i’ve ever seen…. our Headlines Collection:
This year we’re also featuring our most innovative christmas card ever… our round ornaments series! imagine your family and friends opening up their 5×5 translucent square envelope to pull out a little round christmas card that they can hang on their tree or mantle. I personally, am not only going to send these out this year, but i’m also going to use them as decorative gift tags on gifts! that bottle of wine i’m bringing to the holiday dinner party? you bet this is going to be on it. so.many.ideas!
here are some detail shots of the front and back of each circle card:
And i’m not forgetting our multi-purpose cards! these cards can be totally customizable for anything you can imagine. save the dates? christmas? baby announcements? thinking of you? dream it up, and i’ll make it happen.

And for my new mama’s out there right now (there are so many of you! that makes me so happy!) check out our brand new baby announcements for this year! classy, a touch of whimsy, a touch of sweetness like cotton candy. and that’s what we’re calling this series! our Cotton Candy baby announcement series.
Lastly, if you are looking for something a little more modern for your baby announcements, check out what i custom designed for our son Pierson when he was born just three months ago. the front was just his picture, and the back was the typography. We also printed the typography side poster size to hang in his nursery:
I hope you love the designs as much as we do! take hold of this photography special because it will only last until October 1st, and these “specials” only happen once in a blue moon.
re-launch!
July 21, 2010we’ve been working super hard here! on top of getting our clients photos/albums back to them, we’ve also been working on a big overhaul on our website and marketing material. it started with wanting to make the logo more… “us”… which turned into wanting to make the website more “us” and then once you start, you really just cant stop.
go check it out!! quick! and then come back here to learn more. http://www.sugarleafphotography.com
so the new logo…
was inspired by my vintage typewriter that i bought at goodwill for 5 dollars. instead of finding a digital typewriter font, i literally typed out sugar leaf, scanned it in, and created the first part of the logo. “photography” was then handwritten. i love the imperfectness of it, vintage quality, and the fact that it is wholy unique to us, and us alone. and i feel it represents everything about our photography up and down and sideways. YAY!
and the website is jam packed with a completely new portfolio, so be sure to spend some time on there. there will be more changes to come, like a new way for clients to proof and order their images, as well as a gallery specifically for our album products. not to mention, this blog is about to get a big overhaul as well! we can’t very well have the old logo on here, and the new logo on the website
but i just couldnt hold back the re-launch of the website any longer! much too excited
old school film
December 9, 2009Here are some of the final images from the engagement session of Evan and Mark. this is the real deal folks… no faked “vintage” filters overlayed on a digital image, no fake “film” boarders added to the edges… what you see is what you get. it’s SO NICE when i get a client who is interested in doing old school film photography… it’s what i was brought up with, it’s what i was trained in, and i miss spending entire nights in the dark room slowly developing my prints in chemical trays and watching the image slowly come up. there is something so terrifying about not being able to see your image right away after taking it, and exciting at the same time! and the satisfaction after that entire wait? so fantastic.
so all of these photos were taken at their engagement session. you’ll notice there are a lot of objects as well, i try to include as much fine art photography as possible (because clients that request film services generally appreciate fine art!) as well as images of the couple. these images were taken with toy cameras, slide film, and an old camera from 1917 that is essentially a box, with a hole, and a slit for film. it has one button, and that is a trigger to release the shutter! ohhhh the days of simplicity
film services start at only 100.00 which is a STEAL considering the price of film and development these days! definitely consider doing this for your upcoming wedding or engagement session!
