It had been a long day, and i was just finishing up editing some photos at around 1 am.  I always work late at night because it’s just my relaxer, my decompressor. it’s also pretty much the only time my home is quiet enough for me to really punch out a decent amount of work.  So when my phone rang, i knew it was Christen, and she was having her baby. We had just met for coffee that morning, and when i asked how she was feeling she said she was feeling great. definitely ready to have a baby, but not feeling any signs that it would be happening soon.  but, babies always have a way of surprising us i suppose.  it is always funny to look back on those conversations right before a labor begins… Christen had wondered if she’d really be able to do it naturally.  i empathized with her as i had had a hospital birth with an epidural for my first baby, and i had the same concerns with my second.  how much pain will really be involved? can i actually do it?

I love that feeling of a nighttime birth.  hopping in the car and driving to the birthing center with the air so silent and still.  It always feels like everyone else is sleeping in the whole world, and we are on a secret mission to deliver new life.  I arrived at the Labor of Love Birth Center just as Christen was pulling up- perfect timing.   and then things started going quickly…

the birth of Faith was incredible, so smooth and quick….  Christen made it look effortless.  When Faith  began to crown i looked up to see Tim crying…  i just love fathers who are so connected emotionally with their wife and children.

we hadn’t even been at the birthing center for an hour.  it was that quick.   i could hardly believe the clock, and i remembered that conversation with Christen that morning.  she had done it, and done it beautifully.

beautiful Jennifer DeSimone…   i just dont feel like words can really express this photo.  it just… Is.

I wanted to share this post on Friday, but we were taking a day of silence for Japan, with the For Japan, With Love fundraiser/awareness. but, we are SO honored that yet again On To Baby has wanted to publish our work!  they’ve shared my maternity series, and i’m so happy to be able to share it with such a large audience! if you’re expecting a baby (or even just dreaming about having one!) or have little ones at home, you’ve definitely got to check their site out! it posts great ideas for nurseries, newborn sessions, maternity sessions, birthday parties….  its basically just like eye candy every single day! by far my most favorite website for little ones and inspiration.

tour dates announced! 2011

January 17, 2011

tourdates

alright everyone! the tour dates for 2011 have been listed!  this is preliminary, of course, since we’re only just halfway into January so far!  dates are subject to change, so even if it looks like i will not be in your area on a certain date don’t hesitate to contact me anyway!

i repeat… don’t hesitate to contact me!  things change, travel schedules change, etc.  but, if it looks like i AM going to be in your area at some point, give me a ring (or an email, you know) and we may be able to set up a shoot.   if there is enough interest i may be able to extend my travel dates beyond what i have listed here to do a workshop for photographers, hold classes, do a boudoir marathon, engagement marathon, etc.   i’m always up for possibilities!

ps- i’m dying to go to NY (i’ve never been! can you believe that?) or anywhere out of the continental US as well, as i’m feeling a bit itchy for some good culture.  if you know of anyone getting married or needing a photo-shoot in any of these areas, by all means, contact me!

pps- are there really only three months out of the year that i’m going to be home?  in.sane.  go 2011!

the last shot of the session, and it's my favorite :)

Baby Collins joined us last week, in the middle of the night she began her journey to join us all.  I feel so priviledged that i was there to witness and capture it (and a select few pictures are coming soon!- it was truly an incredible experience).   the day before christmas eve i re-visited them to get some new born pictures of collins- and she was such a good baby.  and, her bowels are working famously…  at least one good poo and a couple of pees are par for the course for a new born session.  it’s going to happen when you have a naked baby for more than a few minutes :)   but Collins did one AMAZING projectile poo and squirted me from at least 3 feet away.   check out my jeans…

baby poo! it's a job hazard :)

Now, i did forwarn them i’d have to post this picture because it was really just too good to not share :) and also, because i know Dani and Chris are so wonderfully down to earth they wouldnt mind.  and most of all… it was just so hysterical!  jeans=washable.  this picture? priceless.  please know i am so used to bodily fluids this did not phase me a bit. i was more concerned of getting a picture of it than cleaning it up :)   TOO funny! i am already in love with that little peanut!

Dani first contacted me through the birth center Labor of Love where i delivered Pierson.  she is planning a home birth with the midwives there, and i always love it when i can photograph other labor of love mamas!  i fell in love instantly with her (and later her family, who is BEYOND ADORABLE) because not only is she a former swing dancer (fellow dancer! always love that!) but she is also a vet. and not just a vet, but the best, most wonderful kind of vet you can imagine.  she does hospice care for dying pets, and in-home euthanasia.  she is really the only provider of in-home euthanasia for animals anywhere in this area, and i can’t believe there aren’t more people who do it.  check out her website Lap of Love verterinary hospice and in-home euthanasia. Warning: if you read her bio, you will cry. i can’t even imagine having to take my dogs in to the vet, and have them be stressed out and anxious those last few moments of their life.  We’ve been fortunate enough to always have in-home euthanasia, because, well, when i was growing up we lived in the country, and that’s what country vets did- they came to your house.   anyway, i dont know how she does it. i am in a profession where people are always happy, and she is in a profession where people are always grieving, and she can only try to help make that grieving process a little bit easier.  i will tell you this much, if i had to put my dog down, she would be the person i would call.  ok, enough about that, though, i’m starting to tear up.  on to what we’re really here for… her NEW BABY!  little Baron is going to be a big brother soon (just a few more weeks now!) to a new baby sister, and he’s going to be fabulous.  just check him out pushing his mommy on the swing!  he’s all about it! he was all “no, i dont want to swing… MOMMY SWING!”  and he got such a kick out of pushing her.  and did i mention Dani is having a home  birth?  did i mention i get to photograph it?  I AM!  i’m absolutely thrilled, i can not imagine a more incredible experience than a home birth.

so stay posted, because you’re going to be able to follow this family for an entire year.  i’m also photographing her baby girl all through the first year of life.

Also, i am in love with Baron… he gave me a big grape Popsicle kiss when i left.  it was so tasty! i can’t believe he’s only 4 days younger than my baby, Tavish!

what can i say?  seeing this makes me want to be pregnant again!  how incredibly beautiful is she?!  this was (shhhh….) my favorite photo shoot i did in our whirlwind trip up to WI this past month.  i can’t believe we made it out alive! Dustin and I and both our little babies drove the long haul up to wisconsin, stopping in Illinois for a boudoir shoot, and then pushed the rest of the way up north.  we had so much equipment for so many different weddings and shoots it would have been silly of us to try and fly with all of that.  but let me tell you, there were definite points along the way where i imagined sitting on an airplane having someone serve me peanuts and sodas in little glasses instead of sitting squished between two car seats entertaining one, entertaining the other, and back to the first one.  i could tell you how many times we sang “wheels on the bus” but i think you can probably already imagine.   so aside from the craziness of being homeless for an entire month, there were some amazing amazing highlights to this trip, this being one of my favorites.  not only because Ali is radiantly beautiful and i think Dusty will make just about the best dad in the world (apart from my dustin, who IS the greatest dad in the world, hands down, and he’s a fairly good husband and business partner as well…) but because i’ve known her for so very long.  since 8th grade to be exact.  She was the reason i survived my very first day of 8th grade as “the new girl” in my school.  Fun fact= ali can hold me above her head… with her hands.  we were both cheerleaders (i know!) in high school and she was my base.  i liken her to the strongest women i know.  if anyone can birth a child, it’s going to be that girl.  dont let her fool you with her fairy-like features.

and now, i’ve been a bridesmaid AND a photographer at her wedding, shot her maternity pictures, and am planning a trip back up to make it for her birth.  we are crossing our fingers so so so tightly that i can hop a plane once the contractions start and make it to Madison before that baby comes out.  i’m secretly praying for a long labor, but dont tell Ali that.   I’m also praying for no false labor, because that would not be very funny at all.

ps- that awesome chair?  we found it along side the road on our way to the field.  what a find! i love serendipitous moments like that, and for people who dont think my visions are crazy.

so, stay tuned for more ali and dusty + bambino pictures in the near future!!!  i can not wait.

my cell phone is with me at all times now, just waiting for that call!
