A Decent Cause…

April 26, 2011

I was sitting here at my computer editing photos… who’s i don’t remember.  but i do remember my phone buzzing with a text message from one of my best friends, Julie.  it went a little something like this:

“hey there, just keeping you in the loop.  They’ve found a tumor in Jason’s brain.  he’s going in for surgery right now. ”

Jason Decent is Julie’s long term boyfriend.  the boy she dated all through college and law school.  a boy who faithfully attended almost all dance team events (julie and i were on the team together, as well as roommates). Even then they were more committed to each other in college than some married couples i know now; i sometimes forget that they haven’t had an official ‘ceremony’ yet.  i thought maybe it was a cruel joke; when you think about someone you love finding a brain tumor you dont think you’ll hear about it via text. and then that’s when i realized that’s exactly how you’d find out… you want your close friends to know, but when it’s an emergency situation, you dont have time to call.  you need love and support right then, without having to breakdown.  Love and strength were sent via text back to her and to jason and their families.  it wasn’t until a day later that i got the chance to talk to her on the phone.

Jason had just moved to L.A. to be closer to Julie after their long distance relationship while he was in Law School in Milwaukee. He had just taken and successfully completed the bar exam (remarkably), but had been experiencing dizziness and trouble with balance.  The doctors had attributed it to Vertigo, but two days after Christmas the headaches had gotten so bad they went to the hospital, and there they were given the stunning diagnosis.  Jason is only 27 years old.

Jason’s surgery had gone well, but they needed to go back in within 24 hours to remove more of the tumor which was the size of a lemon pressing on his cerebellum.  The surgeries were successful, but julie and jason later found out that the tumor was stage 3 cancer, and he would need chemotherapy  and radiation treatments as well as lots of physical therapy. Because of such an invasive brain surgery and tumor, Jason needed to re-learn how to do basic functions like swallow, walk, and speak.  The mere thought of having to re-learn these tasks while trying to wrap your mind around ‘cancer’ is something i can not even begin to comprehend. he is truly the bravest and strongest man i know. Recently, he has received good news that the therapy has been working, but he has a very long road ahead of him.

Julie, meanwhile has been steadfast, helping mentally, physically, and financially support Jason and their struggle.  When i received the news, after the initial shock i began to think about some of the more practical worries.  Julie and Jason were out there in California alone, with no family.  Would the hospital respect Julie’s relationship with him even though they weren’t married?  how would they be able to manage with Julie’s salary as a dancer, and Jason’s student loans from law school and undergrad? would he be able to return to work? Recently, a fundraiser was held to help them offset the cost of medical and living expenses, and we want to do our part too.  We know that there are more expenses associated with this battle than just hospital stays and medication, one entire income has been lost, there are student loans to be repaid, and there are times that Julie has been taken away from her career as a professional dancer and instructor to selflessly help nurse Jason back to health.

So, on Friday May 6, join SugarLeaf Photography at the historic (and AMAZINGLY AWESOME) Iron Horse Hotel in Milwaukee, WI for a photography fundraiser with all proceeds going to Jason and Julie for their fight against brain cancer. I’ll be scheduling 30 minute mini-sessions with a suggested donation of 100.00, and will photograph any genre!  portraits, pets, bridal, maternity, engagements, product photography, you name it!  Even if you dont need photographs, i can schedule 30 minute photography lessons for that DSLR that you own but can’t quite figure out!  OR maybe you do have your DSLR figured out, but you just want to take your photography to the next level.  or, if you just want to come hang out with us and bring us coffee and donate money just to donate, then that is welcome too!

tour dates announced! 2011

January 17, 2011

tourdates

alright everyone! the tour dates for 2011 have been listed!  this is preliminary, of course, since we’re only just halfway into January so far!  dates are subject to change, so even if it looks like i will not be in your area on a certain date don’t hesitate to contact me anyway!

i repeat… don’t hesitate to contact me!  things change, travel schedules change, etc.  but, if it looks like i AM going to be in your area at some point, give me a ring (or an email, you know) and we may be able to set up a shoot.   if there is enough interest i may be able to extend my travel dates beyond what i have listed here to do a workshop for photographers, hold classes, do a boudoir marathon, engagement marathon, etc.   i’m always up for possibilities!

ps- i’m dying to go to NY (i’ve never been! can you believe that?) or anywhere out of the continental US as well, as i’m feeling a bit itchy for some good culture.  if you know of anyone getting married or needing a photo-shoot in any of these areas, by all means, contact me!

pps- are there really only three months out of the year that i’m going to be home?  in.sane.  go 2011!

Katie and Greg’s intimate beach ceremony has got to go down as one of my favorite weddings of all time.  i’ve been just dying to post this super 8mm film, it is honestly one of my favorites.  we took a long time (as we always do, but this one especially) picking just the right music that we felt fit the couple and the day.  and, i may be partial, as my own wedding was on the beach with only 9 people in attendance and we also just went out to a local cafe/restaurant type of venue for dinner afterward, but i just love the authenticity of the day.  and how sweet were they on that bicycle!  i’m missing that warm weather… even in Florida it gets cold!

speaking of cold… stay tuned this week for some pictures of our trip to Wisconsin for christmas. i forget how amazing the cold weather is for photography… i cant wait to share with you all!

ten ten ten was a huge day for us…i was off photographing one wedding, Dustin was at another wedding (this one!) filming, and then we re-joined later that night and i got to snap a few pictures as a guest to cap off my night (the beautiful Scarlett Lillian photographed her wedding with the always amazing Kerri McConnell as a second shooter.). Esther’s wedding was beyond amazing- as was expected- she’s a wedding and portrait photographer herself! the venue was beautiful, and the details… OH the details! assortments of jars full of lemons and wildflowers on the tables, collections of different funky frames hung on the outdoor wall to create an outdoor living room with lounge furniture, bare bulb lights strung across the outdoor terrace reception site illuminated the nighttime with a romantic glow, beautiful little vintage style bird cages adorning them. the vintage car they pulled up to the ceremony in, the banyon trees with their ever growing root system standing like the figurative guardians on either side of them supporting them at their wedding ceremony and shading and protecting over them as they said their vows.

but…. there is more exciting news. ok, so i wasn’t going to really say anything on here yet… but i can’t quite help myself. Remember that thing we were going to participate in? the One Day On Earth project? well…. we did.  so did over FIFTEEN THOUSAND PEOPLE from all over the world. literally… every.single.country in the world.  it has gotten so much press, it’s been on NPR, CNN, New York Times, MTV, you name it.  What is One Day on Earth? check this out:

What is One Day on Earth? from One Day On Earth on Vimeo.

this project has blown up all over the world, and has generated a lot of talk.  Dustin and I thought it was a great thing to participate in, and so just thought it would be fun to upload the video and just leave it at that. well… they are making a feature film from bits of clips that have been uploaded from the thousands of people across the entire world. and… turns out they liked what they saw. I’ve been debating on whether or not to mention this on the blog, but really, i sometimes just can’t keep excitingly good things in! At first, i thought i’d be embarrassed to tell you if we didn’t end up making the final cut, but really, i just lay it all out there on the line anyway here and figured you wouldnt hold it against us if we weren’t infact in the final film. Honestly, i’m just honored that they would have watched our film and said that they felt it stood out from the thousands they received and would love the raw unedited footage to use. So. please keep your fingers crossed. an independent film? an independent film festival? our footage? a premiere? to be a part of something like this- something worldwide-a piece of documentation to tell the story of our entire Earth- it seems too surreal and unimaginable.

So there you have it.  i will keep you all updated on the status, but you must promise not to judge us too harshly if we dont in fact end up being in the final feature film. maybe be a shoulder to cry on :) HA!

ok, my goodness… i have so many more posts to make this week! i know it’s supposed to be christmas break or something, but i just can’t help myself! maybe i’ll even share a little of what has been going on over at our house for christmas :) hope you all had a WONDERFUL christmas day, and now it is off to beddy-bye for me :) night night!

i have to say… i am really loving the color film.  danielle could not have possibly been more beautiful, and i love how they both photograph in film.  gorgeous!  and i have to say that their photoshoot at the reception was the best ever… hands down! so glad we got a little footage of it!

We’ve been working some serious overtime this month to get weddings edited and back to clients…and we also got hit with “The Sickness” as i will refer to it from here on out. i dont know what kind of virus has decided to make itself right at home at our place but it is a whopper. a serious doosie.  i’ve been sick now for 3 weeks and 6 days, and counting.  the whole family has got it! so needless to say, it’s been a crazy holiday season.

BUT, holiday cards are designed, printed, assembled, and sent out.  christmas cookies are made. the tree is decorated. presents are (almost all) wrapped, t’was the night before christmas has been read, granola has been put out for the reindeer, hot apple cider is brewing, cookies and milk and a nice letter for santa have been laid out,  christmas music is playing, i’m editing photos (i know, right? it’s christmas eve!), the little elf has been hidden in the tree, and tomorrow will be a wonderful wonderful day. i love these traditions… do any of you have special traditions you do in your home? i’m always looking to adopt new ones :)   hope you all are having a wonderful christmas eve night!

oh my…. tears. tears! Amy and Lynn’s wedding was spectacular, you can see it here, here, AND here to get the feel for the whole weekend long love celebration. the brief synopsis is Amy is one of my closest, dearest friends, and i was honored (so honored!) to play a couple of parts on her big day.  that of bridesmaid, AND photographer.  Dustin filmed the wedding with the help of myself and our second shooter, Lindsay.  between the wedding photography, the super 8mm film, the photobooth at the reception and of course taking breaks to pump since i had just recently had a baby, I absolutely could not have done it without a team, so i’m so thankful for Dustin and Lindsay.

but now, about the film:

how sweet is the letter Lynn wrote to Amy to include in the film?  she did not know about this by the way, he is always thinking of amazing ways to show his love for her.  they have a rich rich relationship, a love that i have only seen a couple of times.  With all super 8mm films, we try to choose the music very carefully, music either personal to the couple or that really exemplifies their relationship.  “slow love” we felt was so appropriate for amy and lynn…  they make a concerted effort at all levels to keep things grounded. whether that be making sure they’re both home in the evenings, going to yoga classes together, traveling to south east asia and the middle east together,  buying groceries at organic and farmer’s markets, to lynn always making Amy coffee in the morning, riding bicycles to work/school instead of driving, it is truly a slow, organic,  love.  one that evolved over the years of college and lynn studying abroad and being separated by such massive distances for so very long (years long).  and of course, the song Amie by damien rice was the song that lynn played as he proposed to her at the orpheum theatre…. and the final song i felt like celebrated their fun loving side- i can totally see amy and lynn buying everyone sweaters and teaching them how to dance and buying their parents a home in the south of france (ps… lynn speaks fluent french and lived there for a while!).

the thing that impressed me most about their ceremony (have i already talked about this?) is the fact that everyone present honestly felt like either lynn or amy was their best friend.  amy is my best friend, and Anna’s best friend, and Sadie’s best friend…. on and on and on.  that is the impact these two people play in other’s lives. it is truly amazing.

love. love. love.   :)

ps… many more super 8 films to come!  we’re knockin em down!  hope to have all weddings/films done before christmas!!!!  it may be a lofty goal… but we sure as heck are going to do our best!  we want everyone to have a merry christmas :)

photobooth

not that i expect every wedding i shoot to be the same, but i LOVE that the three weddings i shot in Wisconsin last month were so completely different.  each one had hired the photobooth for the reception, each one dustin and i were both filming/photographing, each one around the same time of day, each one in madison (or close by).  but they each carried their own completely different style and character.  Danielle and Erics wedding was so.much.fun.   and not that my other weddings weren’t fun, but that was the common theme throughout this wedding!  everything from the party bus, to the photobooth, to walking down the middle of state street by the capital with the bridal party clapping loudly and doing cheers to draw as MUCH attention to us as possible, to carrying around giant white balloons for photo-ops….  that is what this day was all about.   I may or may not have had a glass of champagne (per insistance from Eric… such an instigator!) on the party bus and it was oh-so-good.  hence, the reason i decided to do their ring shot with the cork.  and that picture above of the guy opening up the bottle on the party bus? yep… it was his first time.  caught on film!  enough you dirty minds!   i’m not sure he’s 18!

really though, this was the ultimate classy affair.  everything from beginning to end (as well as the mother’s of the bride and groom! floor length gowns for both of them and im still not completely conviced they weren’t sisters of the bride and groom) was absolutely beautiful.  i happened to remember my top secret ally way in madison (way back from my days in college trying to sneak into bars the backway…. shhhh) and we definitely used it to it’s full potential for some bridal party shots.

and then of course….. the photobooth.  this was the most unique one we’ve done (we’re open to ANY suggestions from any bride, btw…. you needn’t use the white backdrop if you dont want to), and it was a smash hit.  Dani made mustaches and big red lips and it was hysterical.

and of course…. Dustin and I just couldn’t resist….   hello new facebook profile pic!  God, i love my husband.  i’m pretty sure this was taken at around midnight and we were still going strong.  alternative titles for these pictures could be:  ”chest hair, who needs a sweater!”  ”button that up!” or “why, no sir.  we were decapitated from the hips up right before that shot!”

Stay tuned for the super 8mm film we did of their wedding! it’s being processed and developed as we speak!

hello martha!

August 19, 2010

as i’m sure you’ve heard  by now, we’ve been featured on Martha Stewart Weddings! Evan and Mark’s wedding from last October was truly Martha worthy, and I’m so happy to announce that she thought so too!  I could go on and on about all the amazing, thoughtfully crafted and carried out details, but the actual posts can say it so much better than i can.  Go over to the site and check it out!   There are three places we’re featured: the main website, and then here on the blog where you can watch the super 8mm film of the day, and then again on the blog here where you can see some of the engagement pics we did of them before the big day, as well as a sweet picture of Dustin and I filming!  We were so happy to team up with all the amazing wedding vendors to make Evan and Mark’s day a reality- we especially loved Missy McLamb’s beautiful film photographs of the day.  We’re so happy to see that there are still people out there creating fine art film images of weddings with vintage cameras.  we’re not alone!

re-launch!

July 21, 2010

we’ve been working super hard here! on top of getting our clients photos/albums back to them, we’ve also been working on a big overhaul on our website and marketing material. it started with wanting to make the logo more… “us”… which turned into wanting to make the website more “us” and then once you start, you really just cant stop.

go check it out!! quick! and then come back here to learn more.  http://www.sugarleafphotography.com

so the new logo…

was inspired by my vintage typewriter that i bought at goodwill for 5 dollars.  instead of finding a digital typewriter font, i literally typed out sugar leaf, scanned it in, and created the first part of the logo. “photography” was then handwritten. i love the imperfectness of it,  vintage quality, and the fact that it is wholy unique to us, and us alone.  and i feel it represents everything about our photography up and down and sideways.  YAY!

and the website is jam packed with a completely new portfolio, so be sure to spend some time on there.  there will be more changes to come, like a new way for clients to proof and order their images, as well as a gallery specifically for our album products.  not to mention, this blog is about to get a big overhaul as well!  we can’t very well have the old logo on here, and the new logo on the website :) but i just couldnt hold back the re-launch of the website any longer! much too excited :)

One Day on Earth

April 21, 2010

this year, especially over my maternity leave, we are going to work toward a couple of goals.  Both Dustin and I desperately want to give back to our community and our world.  we have sketched out plans for all areas of our photography/filmography business to help make the earth a better place.  everything from going more green than we already are, to rewarding those who make a significant effort to be good to our mother earth, to people who’ve gone through incredible hardships and come out on top.  we want to help, we want to give back, we want to document.  this business started because i love doing what i do. I never want to lose that, i want to continue to be inspired on a daily basis by what i see around me, and what i see through my lens.   I’ve hinted at a few of these plans in the past couple of months, and more will be revealed when things are set in stone and etched out!

one plan that i CAN announce right now is our participation in One Day On Earth, a global documentary encompassing 7 continents, and every single country.  we’re so excited about it!

here’s the premise that was taken directly from the website:

Join us on 10.10.10 for an unprecedented event. Every Nation, 24 hours and You.

Across the planet, documentary filmmakers, students, and inspired citizens will record the human experience over a 24-hour period. By participating in this historic event, you will help capture the diversity of life and culture on this planet. Together we will create a document that is a gift to the world.

One Day on Earth is a documentary and new media project about the amazing diversity, conflict, tragedy, and triumph that occurs in one 24-hour period on Earth. More than a film, One Day on Earth is a multi-platform participatory media project. The flagship of this project is a 120-minute documentary to be released theatrically. Through the One Day on Earth platform we will establish a community that not only watches, but participates.

Dustin will be filming with super 8mm film on our vintage cameras a beautiful wedding of a girl i’m proud to call not only fellow photographer, but friend.  Esther Kraus, of esther louise photography is getting married to her sweetheart of a man Jesse on this day, 10.10.10, and i can’t think of a better way to document a huge part of our culture than to submit her wedding.  I also can’t think of a better media to submit than super 8mm film.  an era gone by, it gives such an amazing timeless quality to whatever you film.

So, we invite you to participate along with us in this amazing effort to document the world in a 24 hour time span.  anyone can participate, anyone can upload footage.  and who knows, maybe your documentary will be chosen for the final 120 minute feature film that will be theatrically released.  get out your camera.  film what’s important to you.  what would you film if you only had one day to do so?
