AH! i love quirky engagement sessions.  and i love it when clients are up for anything, and Jake and Casey most certainly are.  it’s not often i start out a session saying “so… you can do headstands… right?”  I had been wanting to use the old TV for a long time, and had this ridiculous vision of a TV on a tripod on the beach.

I can’t wait for their wedding this weekend!  With both of their personalities i know it’s going to be amazing!

I literally haven’t even finished backing up these photos from last night yet, but i had to share just a tiny tiny sneek peak of what we’ve been up to this weekend!  i can not wait to share more!  Congrats Amy and Pete, i couldn’t possibly be happier for you!  MUAH!

Well, this wedding has a sweet little place in my heart. The newly wedded couple and I share the same alma matter,  the University of Wisconsin. When they said they wanted to go on the field at Camp Randall Stadium for their wedding photos my little heart may have actually skipped a beat.  Its my old stomping grounds- I was on the University of Wisconsin dance team and spent every home football game right there on that field.  not much has changed- it’s still 10 degrees hotter on the field, the rubber bits still get everywhere, and it’s still a massively (!) overwhelming feeling to be right there on the 50 yard line.

Kersten and Dan didn’t just stop with the Badger theme at the field, however. Guests of honor included the UW marching band (i totally teared up when they played ‘Varsity’), and Bucky Badger himself! Like most Wisconsin girls, Bucky was my first true love.

And although it rained (ok. it POURED.) Kersten and Dan were amazing, and so up for anything- even going out in the rain to get a few shots at night. the weather held off just long enough to have their outdoor ceremony- it was like we had handed the Gods of Weather the wedding day itinerary.

We finished off the night with a wild Photobooth- quite possibly one of my favorites thus far!   And thanks to my second shooter Lindsay- i couldn’t have done the day without her!

Also, thanks to everyone with your patience these next two weeks as we’re traveling throughout wisconsin for shoots and weddings and sometimes have very limited cell phone service and internet! We’re loving traveling and working, but ready to be back to normalcy in the office in Florida.  :-)

We had the most beautiful light for this engagement session.  gorgeous, warm, hazy, summer light and fields full of flowers and tall grass- my two weaknesses.   Jake and Jen were up for anything, even jumping into the lake (which, um, is slightly less warm than Floridian waters. it is Wisconsin after all…), and running up and down the country road barefoot trying to get the kite in the air.   I love clients like this- the ones who know it’s more about the fun, and the experience, than keeping neat and tidy. i loved this session.

I dont know too many brides who can pull off a pink wedding dress, and Sara did it perfectly.  It was so incredible, one of my favorite wedding dresses for sure.  The details tied in perfectly, with the blush pink roses in all different vases of sterling silver, white, and black.  little vignettes of flowers were placed throughout the venue, indoors and out and had an even greater effect than large bouquets would have.  Sara and Grady had a bluegrass band and guests clad in cowboy hats danced the two-step all night around the reflecting pool under the pergola.  it was a relaxed, easy going southern wedding that made me want to get married all over again!

And, what makes this wedding even more special is that Sara is actually my good friend from elementary school.  we used to ride horses together, taking them on trail rides bareback and laying down so the backs of our heads rested on their rears, letting them take control of leading us through the trails as we talked.  her little brothers and sister were like my own little siblings- to see them all grown up now is just crazy. it makes me tear up just to think about it!

Congrats Sara and Grady!

Artist’s Statement:

In this ongoing series i attempt to blur the lines between nature and the modern world, drawing connection between the Earth, it’s elements, and the feminine body’s natural cycles of birth, aging, and process.  By using organic materials to cover the body, such as mud, milk, and water among others, I seek to create a closer relationship with the elements that are so closely related to birth and beginnings but that are often overlooked in today’s hyper-sterilized world of birthing and life.

My experience with the births of my own two children serve as inspiration for this series, as it was a transformative process that i have yet been able to describe in words. The realization that my body was creating a human being while i went on about my day concerned with the mundane things of daily life was an epiphany that our minds are not the ones in control of our bodies. Instead of being the Master Control Center, it merely just another organ functioning as it was intended. The development of the fetus, the birth, and the post partum phase all seemlessly worked together just as it had for millenia.  It is the one true tie we all have together, and should be celebrated as such.

It’s August, and our huge wedding season up north in Wisconsin.  it’s been a lot of travel, and a lot of chaos, but i found some time to get together with Ali and Dusty and baby Rowan.  You’ll recognize them from the winning photograph of the Canon Imagin8ion Project-  the birth photograph that is inspiring Ron Howard’s next hollywood production.  Rowan is now 10 months old, and a solid little chunk of rolls and strawberry blonde curls.  I’m amazed that it was this little baby who Ali brought forth naturally with the supportive help of her husband Dusty.  how great it is to see everything come full circle. :-)

What an incredible night.  When you walked into the reception ballroom it was like you were transported into another world.  The band was incredible, people were excited, the lighting and floral were just beyond.  Kristi had thought of every detail to make this concept come to life- they even had a table cloth hand made completely out of peacock feathers.  it was stunning.  This was not a peacock themed wedding, it was a concept – an inspiration – that blossomed into an incredible and cohesive environment that put a whole new twist on the wedding.

Still much more to come of the photobooth we had set up! you can see some of the props that were included… all found at Kristi’s house!

and, the night would not have been possible without my amazing second shooter, Aaron Bornfleth who (and i cant believe i’m even saying this!) had just as much energy and drive as i did even at the end of the 14 hour day.  He spent the day bouncing back and forth between the guys and the girls getting ready and flying here and there.  Thanks Aaron!
