just a tiny sampling of the band i photographed – i posted their sneak peek a while back… remember this image? i shot this session in both digital and film, and am hoping to do a lot more in film in the future. it’s where my heart is, where i started, and (really) where i should be. digital is just so…. convenient. and, dont get me wrong, we NEED digital, but we dont really need it… you know? anyway, go check out Alias Julius’ music right over here! so glad our schedules aligned before they had to leave for their European tour. they do seriously wonderful work, and hopefully Dustin and I will be able to go watch them perform live sometime soon!

finding a killer location without a killer location
June 2, 2011A lot of people lately have been sending me emails with how-to questions, and a common thread i’ve been hearing is “well, i WISH i could do a shoot like that, but i dont have any cool _________ like you do” (insert, ‘ideas’, ‘locations’, ‘props’, ‘lighting’, ‘clients’) and i’m totally calling bull shit. Photography has absolutely nothing to do with the best location ever, and DEFINITELY doesn’t have anything to do with props, or cool clients, or even ideas. it’s about the moment, and that is all it is about. yes, most of the time you’ll hear me say that it’s all about the lighting, but in reality, the moment means so much more. being a good photographer means capturing that moment in the best lighting possible, and creating a good location out of nothing. A good photographer will make sure that the moment is the focus, not the props, or even the location. it’s all about knowing what to eliminate so that the viewer can focus on just one thing- your subject -even if the ‘subject’ means the feeling or emotion of the photograph. The ‘subject’ doesn’t necessarily have to be a person or a thing.
A lot of the great photographs you see are not done in some incredible location, they’re done in completely ordinary locations. with practice, you can start to spot these hidden opportunities that are right underneath your nose.

Pierson is 1!
June 2, 2011Driving home from dinner one night i noticed this field right by our house that has been there for…. well… forever. it’s surrounded by busy streets, and so i had never really thought much of it. but, feeling sentimental and in love with my little fam i asked Dustin to pull over and we let the boys run around while we each snapped some photographs. i feel up to my ears in photography lately, trying to get caught up from my wisconsin and cincinatti trip, but shoots like these are so important to me to keep up my love of photography and creativity level. sometimes i wonder, would i get burned out of photography if i didn’t have my boys? constantly doing photography of other people’s loved ones is very inspiring, but it’s a whole new level when it is your own babies you’re photographing.
Thanks D, for taking some shots of me with the boys. these photos mean a lot to me, i want to pause this time and hold on to it so badly.
