A lot of people lately have been sending me emails with how-to questions, and a common thread i’ve been hearing is “well, i WISH i could do a shoot like that, but i dont have any cool _________ like you do” (insert, ‘ideas’, ‘locations’, ‘props’, ‘lighting’, ‘clients’) and i’m totally calling bull shit. Photography has absolutely nothing to do with the best location ever, and DEFINITELY doesn’t have anything to do with props, or cool clients, or even ideas. it’s about the moment, and that is all it is about. yes, most of the time you’ll hear me say that it’s all about the lighting, but in reality, the moment means so much more. being a good photographer means capturing that moment in the best lighting possible, and creating a good location out of nothing. A good photographer will make sure that the moment is the focus, not the props, or even the location. it’s all about knowing what to eliminate so that the viewer can focus on just one thing- your subject -even if the ‘subject’ means the feeling or emotion of the photograph. The ‘subject’ doesn’t necessarily have to be a person or a thing.
A lot of the great photographs you see are not done in some incredible location, they’re done in completely ordinary locations. with practice, you can start to spot these hidden opportunities that are right underneath your nose.
