June 19, 2011Don Cesar Wedding {st pete beach wedding photographer}
June 18, 2011What an absolutely gorgeous affair by Michelle and Dave… and held at the always gorgeous Don Cesar in St. Pete beach, ceremony at Eckerd College Wireman Chapel. i loved all Michelle’s bright and sunny bouquets with pops of yellow- it was absolutely PERFECT for the location with the Don‘s pink and gold interior and exterior. The wedding party was hilarious- the bridesmaids accosted us in the hallway with their antics- i think it might be my favorite bridesmaid picture ever. Typically we’re accosted by groomsmen, so this was a lovely change!
and of course, thank you to my LOVELY assistant Amber… it’s amazing to have someone carry your bags and switch out lenses. she was so on top of things! and of course, Esther Louise for second shooting for me. it’s always fun to have a team of ladies behind me- it makes the day just fly by!
Congrats Dave and Michelle! it was an incredible day!
WOW. wow. seriously, today has been an unreal day.
Canon just contacted me to let me know that one of my photographs has been selected (out of hundreds and hundreds! AH!) as one of the top 30 semi-finalists in their Project Imagin8ion contest. its a project headed by Ron Howard (director of A Beautiful Mind and Angels and Demons among many others) – 8 photographs will be chosen to be the inspiration behind his next hollywood project.
i didn’t even mention that i was entering this contest here on the blog because… well…. there were like HUNDREDS of submissions, and the people who submitted photographs were unreal. i mean, crazy crazy good photographers. but, now that they picked me to be in the top thirty, i need your help!
you can vote for your favorite image by going to http://www.youtube.com/Imagination. My photograph is in the ‘relationship’ category and you can find it if you search ‘lexia’
if my photograph is selected as the winner, i will have the chance to go to NY to meet Ron Howard and see the production he is creating that my photograph inspired. it would be the biggest honor… i can not even IMAGINE. so please, just take a quick second and go to http://www.youtube.com/Imagination, and search ‘lexia’
the image is from Ali’s birth of her baby Rowan (you can see the whole birth story at http://sugarleafphotography.com/site2/index2.php) at one of the pivotal parts of her labor- right when she was in transition.
This photograph has a special place in my heart for a couple of reasons. I’ve photographed Dusty and Ali throughout all the pivotal moments of their life together (wedding, maternity, childbirth, etc) so when she asked me to photograph the birth of her baby, it was a no brainer… except for the fact that i live across the country now. At the first sign of labor i hopped on a plane; it was a risk, but luckily her labor lasted long enough that i was able to arrive in plenty of time. It was the first birth i had ever photographed and it spurred in me a desire to be a part of the whole birthing process from a photographer perspective. there is something about being right there when new life arrives…
i knew right after taking this photograph that it was one of my favorites of all time. it doesnt really have anything to do with the picture itself (technically or composition wise) but just because of the emotion and the support that was in that room. i am SO happy and honored that someone else was moved by it as well.
wow. so absolutely grateful. Thank you so much Canon and Ron Howard!

I write articles there (non photography related!) and also do video blogs. It’s a great little community of people talking about married life and how to deal with it.
Baby Claire {tampa newborn photographer}
June 14, 2011Its been baby central around here lately! it seems to always come in waves. I’ll photograph exclusively newborns for a month or so, and then i’ll have a gush of toddler sessions, then back to weddings. sometimes it’s a surge of boudoir sessions. but lately… it’s been babies and i’m LOVING it.
seriously… i could just eat her up. And big sister Cate… how adorable is she with her little dirty cheeks? THAT is how love looks.
I am a photography NINJA (tampa newborn photography)
June 14, 2011Sometimes things just dont go your way. Sometimes you run out of natural available light because your session runs a little long because you can never predict how a newborn is going to be for a photo shoot. and Sometimes you have to get seriously SERIOUSLY creative to get one.last.photograph.
We had been trying all evening to get sweet baby Gavin to fall asleep. while we got some amazing shots of he alone and with mom and alone with dad, we had yet to get a family shot. We still had about 15-20 minutes left of sunlight so i thought it would be no problem, right? wrong. Newborn sessions are about 90% soothing and feeding, and the other 10% is posing and photographing. Gavin had had enough, and was not going to tollerate “just one more shot…”
my rule of thumb is to never never push things with a portrait session for any age of child, be that newborn, 6 month, 1 year and up. its never a good experience when you feel pressured, and if a baby needs to take a break to nurse, i’d be much happier if he was happy.
But, in this situation, i was sweating it a little bit. i knew if we took any time at all to nurse him, we would have absolutely zero light. zero. Sure, i’ve got my flashes (which i would normally never ever use for a newborn session- flash can disturb your slumbering baby that you worked so hard to get sleeping!) but that is not going to create soft enough light for a newborn session without the use of a giant softbox.
I was crossing my fingers that we would have just a tiny tiny little bit of light left, and maybe i could just bump my ISO up a tad and it would be ok.
ummmmm no.
definitely NOT ok. I was quickly running out of options and the thought of driving another hour and a half round trip the next day just to get ONE photograph (not to mention intruding on their schedules) was not something i wanted to do.
so, thinking quickly on my feet i noticed the giant white garage door. and then thoughts immediately went to my car’s headlights. i jumped in my vehicle, pulled it up quite close to the garage door, and turned on my headlights so that it was bouncing off the garage door. the white garage door acted like a GIANT oversized soft reflector creating the softest light.
I used a silver reflector to bounce back a little bit of light on the opposite side of my subjects, so it would have a nice soft even look.
and i used the blank wall behind them as the background. (ps- see that blue sky?!?! it’s the blue hour!!!)
and then… we got this:
I am not going to lie… i’m kind of a little bit proud. not only did i feel like a total photography NINJA but truthfully, it was softer light than i could have gotten with anything else. i may honestly use my car headlight/garage reflector again if i can swing it. It also feels good to know that you dont have to spend millions of dollars on photography if you’re smart enough to think of ways to get around it. Would i have preferred to have a softbox? if i was worried about impressing them and looking professional ABSOLUTELY. But, I’ve photographed Jen many times now, and I know she trusts that whatever crazy thing i’m asking her to do will end up looking great. and that’s what really counts, right? the final image. Getting there is the fun part.
baby gavin is here! {tampa newborn photography}
June 14, 2011oh my word… look at this sweet little muffin! beautiful baby Gavin has arrived!
and he’s welcomed by his doggy brother and sister…. they were so squirly and wriggly!
and if that last photo didn’t make you smile… this one SURELY will. i think i chuckle everytime i see it.
i can’t take any credit here… he was posing himself. that little ham!
you will not believe where we photographed this last one and how it was lit.. stay tuned for the next post on how i photographed this without any available light in a SERIOUS pinch! i love gorilla lighting and this one seriously SERIOUSLY takes the cake…
