It was the day before Dani was due, and she had been having some contractions and false labor in the days leading up.  We knew it was going to be soon, and i was sleeping with my phone right next to my body. my bags were packed, camera gear charged, and ready to go in a moments notice. i was so excited for this birth… the birth of collins, because, other than the fact that the birth of a baby is my favorite thing to photograph, i was especially excited because i knew i’d be photographing collins all year long- maternity, her infant photography, 6 month, and one year.  with this family i was going to be a part of the entire process.  what made me even happier, was that this birth was going to be incredible because it was a natural home birth- something i’m quite passionate about.

3:12 am Chris calls me.  the moment my phone rang i knew who it was, i needn’t look at my caller id to know Dani was in labor.  i gave Dustin a quick kiss goodbye, brushed my teeth, grabbed my bag and was in the car by 3:17 am.   the night was beautiful- little houses silently lit up with christmas lights, the air still, the roads empty.  there was something magical about the fact that everyone was sleeping and somewhere out there there was a mama by a warm fireplace quietly laboring away to bring a new life into this world.

as i drove through the night, i saw a brilliant shooting star.  wish number 1- healthy baby and mama.  and then i saw another- wish number 2- no complications.  turns out there was a meteor shower that night…  there is something so whimsical about that.  ”you were born during a meteor shower”  sounds so much more romantic than “you were born in the midst of tornados, floods tearing through the city- a storm like no one had ever seen before” like my first baby was born in.  I arrived  to a warm house with a fireplace crackling, a birthing tub filling with water, and wonderful family surrounding Dani and Chris.

Dani was still talking between contractions- she had said earlier that ‘i’m not a screamer” but throughout her labor i couldnt believe how incredibly strong and silent she was.  almost effortlessly laboring.  and of course midwife Bea was there, wonderful as she is with her beautiful british accent, quietly helping dani through the contractions and getting ready for the birth.  i love this shot of her sitting by the fire going through the documents.

Dani didn’t so much as make a groan… just a few breaths.  Only two hours after i had arrived, and two minutes of pushing, she delivered a beautiful baby girl in the tub of warm water. Dani was able to actually deliver her herself- pulling collins from her body and up onto her chest for skin to skin contact. Collins arrived beautifully, with a perfectly shaped head, and covered in Vernix, the wonderful cheesy substance that acts as the most amazing moisturizer in the world.  i cant imagine being in fluid for your entire life, and then all the sudden being in dry air.  the vernix helps protect and moisturize the baby’s skin for those first few hours of exposure,  you wouldn’t  want to ‘clean her off’.

a little cheek pinch from Dani’s dad… i love that :)

They were able to stay like that- together, skin to skin- for as long as they wanted.  skin to skin contact immediately after birth is the most beneficial thing you can do for your baby- it is a crucial component for successful breastfeeding initiation. Nature intended for a baby to be placed immediately on the mothers chest, and the mother’s internal temperature is actually immediately after a birth- it’s natures way of helping the infant to regain a normal temperture.

i love this photo of Dani. she just gave birth minutes before, and she's already ready and rarin' to go. chipper as ever at 5 am after laboring all night.

and then little baron woke up and came down the stairs to see what santa had brought him early… a new baby sister.  as he was coming in the room Dani asked “look baron! look at mommy’s tummy!  where’d the baby go?” and he said with excitement “right there! the baby’s right there!” and went over to examine little feet, little hands, and little toes.

If you want to know more about midwives, natural childbirth, or why you should consider your options of having your baby at a free standing birthing center or at home a good place to start is by watching this film (for free! right now on your computer, right here!): the business of being born and i promise in the first 10 minutes you’ll at least be asking your physicians some very important questions.   you can also read Your Best Birth or you can call or email me, or (even better yet!) check out your local free standing birth center and talk to some midwives in person.  in Tampa, it’s labor of love.  there are some TERRIFYING statistics right now for Florida (i just googled c-section rate, florida, and it provided a sickening amount of scary information) i had my first baby in a hospital (and it was a wonderful experience, but i got lucky)- and didn’t really know that i even had any options. i’m so glad that i discovered that there was another way, a more natural way, before i had Pierson (note: the link takes you to my personal blog, and the photographs are fairly intimate.  if you dont feel comfortable with viewing breast feeding, or birth, you may not want to click the link. i’ve shared these because i feel comfortable that birth is such a natural process, and hope to encourage others that they can birth and breast feed as well, and do not wish to offend anyone ).  if you’re pregnant i hope you all can find the right birth place for your baby and yourself, whatever way that might be :)

Katie and Greg’s intimate beach ceremony has got to go down as one of my favorite weddings of all time.  i’ve been just dying to post this super 8mm film, it is honestly one of my favorites.  we took a long time (as we always do, but this one especially) picking just the right music that we felt fit the couple and the day.  and, i may be partial, as my own wedding was on the beach with only 9 people in attendance and we also just went out to a local cafe/restaurant type of venue for dinner afterward, but i just love the authenticity of the day.  and how sweet were they on that bicycle!  i’m missing that warm weather… even in Florida it gets cold!

speaking of cold… stay tuned this week for some pictures of our trip to Wisconsin for christmas. i forget how amazing the cold weather is for photography… i cant wait to share with you all!

the last shot of the session, and it's my favorite :)

Baby Collins joined us last week, in the middle of the night she began her journey to join us all.  I feel so priviledged that i was there to witness and capture it (and a select few pictures are coming soon!- it was truly an incredible experience).   the day before christmas eve i re-visited them to get some new born pictures of collins- and she was such a good baby.  and, her bowels are working famously…  at least one good poo and a couple of pees are par for the course for a new born session.  it’s going to happen when you have a naked baby for more than a few minutes :)   but Collins did one AMAZING projectile poo and squirted me from at least 3 feet away.   check out my jeans…

tampa newborn photographer

baby poo! it's a job hazard :)

Now, i did forwarn them i’d have to post this picture because it was really just too good to not share :) and also, because i know Dani and Chris are so wonderfully down to earth they wouldnt mind.  and most of all… it was just so hysterical!  jeans=washable.  this picture? priceless.  please know i am so used to bodily fluids this did not phase me a bit. i was more concerned of getting a picture of it than cleaning it up :)   TOO funny! i am already in love with that little peanut!

ten ten ten was a huge day for us…i was off photographing one wedding, Dustin was at another wedding (this one!) filming, and then we re-joined later that night and i got to snap a few pictures as a guest to cap off my night (the beautiful Scarlett Lillian photographed her wedding with the always amazing Kerri McConnell as a second shooter.). Esther’s wedding was beyond amazing- as was expected- she’s a wedding and portrait photographer herself! the venue was beautiful, and the details… OH the details! assortments of jars full of lemons and wildflowers on the tables, collections of different funky frames hung on the outdoor wall to create an outdoor living room with lounge furniture, bare bulb lights strung across the outdoor terrace reception site illuminated the nighttime with a romantic glow, beautiful little vintage style bird cages adorning them. the vintage car they pulled up to the ceremony in, the banyon trees with their ever growing root system standing like the figurative guardians on either side of them supporting them at their wedding ceremony and shading and protecting over them as they said their vows.

but…. there is more exciting news. ok, so i wasn’t going to really say anything on here yet… but i can’t quite help myself. Remember that thing we were going to participate in? the One Day On Earth project? well…. we did.  so did over FIFTEEN THOUSAND PEOPLE from all over the world. literally… every.single.country in the world.  it has gotten so much press, it’s been on NPR, CNN, New York Times, MTV, you name it.  What is One Day on Earth? check this out:

What is One Day on Earth? from One Day On Earth on Vimeo.

this project has blown up all over the world, and has generated a lot of talk.  Dustin and I thought it was a great thing to participate in, and so just thought it would be fun to upload the video and just leave it at that. well… they are making a feature film from bits of clips that have been uploaded from the thousands of people across the entire world. and… turns out they liked what they saw. I’ve been debating on whether or not to mention this on the blog, but really, i sometimes just can’t keep excitingly good things in! At first, i thought i’d be embarrassed to tell you if we didn’t end up making the final cut, but really, i just lay it all out there on the line anyway here and figured you wouldnt hold it against us if we weren’t infact in the final film. Honestly, i’m just honored that they would have watched our film and said that they felt it stood out from the thousands they received and would love the raw unedited footage to use. So. please keep your fingers crossed. an independent film? an independent film festival? our footage? a premiere? to be a part of something like this- something worldwide-a piece of documentation to tell the story of our entire Earth- it seems too surreal and unimaginable.

So there you have it.  i will keep you all updated on the status, but you must promise not to judge us too harshly if we dont in fact end up being in the final feature film. maybe be a shoulder to cry on :) HA!

ok, my goodness… i have so many more posts to make this week! i know it’s supposed to be christmas break or something, but i just can’t help myself! maybe i’ll even share a little of what has been going on over at our house for christmas :) hope you all had a WONDERFUL christmas day, and now it is off to beddy-bye for me :) night night!

i have to say… i am really loving the color film.  danielle could not have possibly been more beautiful, and i love how they both photograph in film.  gorgeous!  and i have to say that their photoshoot at the reception was the best ever… hands down! so glad we got a little footage of it!

We’ve been working some serious overtime this month to get weddings edited and back to clients…and we also got hit with “The Sickness” as i will refer to it from here on out. i dont know what kind of virus has decided to make itself right at home at our place but it is a whopper. a serious doosie.  i’ve been sick now for 3 weeks and 6 days, and counting.  the whole family has got it! so needless to say, it’s been a crazy holiday season.

BUT, holiday cards are designed, printed, assembled, and sent out.  christmas cookies are made. the tree is decorated. presents are (almost all) wrapped, t’was the night before christmas has been read, granola has been put out for the reindeer, hot apple cider is brewing, cookies and milk and a nice letter for santa have been laid out,  christmas music is playing, i’m editing photos (i know, right? it’s christmas eve!), the little elf has been hidden in the tree, and tomorrow will be a wonderful wonderful day. i love these traditions… do any of you have special traditions you do in your home? i’m always looking to adopt new ones :)   hope you all are having a wonderful christmas eve night!

the arrival…

i’m still on a high from the amazing home birth i photographed last night.  and because i have not really slept yet (although i got a fairly decent nap this afternoon) i’m not going to make a full blog post- but leave you with just this one little moment.   This feeds my soul.

we are so sick at our house.  my desk is currently a smattering of used tea bags, honey, tissues, and an array  of (breastmilk safe) cold/flu medications.  and my biggest little one (that one you see here) is suffering the same thing i am.  i can hear him wake up (he’s in the room next to the office) and whimper and raspilly cough.  it breaks my heart.  speak of the devil…..  my poor little man is crying again.

This weekend i spent finalizing client’s holiday cards, sending things to print, putting last minute orders through, going through the mountain of emails that accumulated while i was sick, and i happened to come across these photos that i had completely forgotten about from this summer.  It happens, in my family.  photos are generally taken, but sometimes aren’t edited until months later (if they ever do get there!) because my brain is full of weddings and family shoots, and infants and births, and well, you get the picture.  i always feel safe that at least the photos are there, they were captured, and i will get to them when i can. and even though right now i should really be in bed, resting, so i can have a somewhat productive day tomorrow, i sat down and put together a few shots.

i love these. they were taken on Dustin’s parent’s land earlier this summer when we went up to visit them in Wisconsin.  Tavish was running around naked because we like to do that when we can. i mean, not Dustin and I, per say, but our kids.  out in the country no one knows if you’re naked or clothed and we love the fact that we can run around in the grass barefoot and not have to worry about fire ants, water moccassins, alligators… you know. the typical.  So Tavish was busy enjoying being a boy and pulling around Grandma’s ancient radio flyer wagon (love.it.)  and then the sun started to go down and the most beautiful late summer day light happened.  Tavish was in a quiet thoughtfull mood, content with just being his naked self in his old wagon outside.  i knew it wouldn’t last for long, so i quickly grabbed my camera. i snapped just a couple shots before he decided he was done and pulled the wagon off elsewhere.  i dont like to push my kids with photography, i never want them to be all “mom. seriously? again with the camera?”  i want to be as unobtrusive in their lives (with the camera) as possible, but i can not help but think that AlmostEverySingleMomentIsTheBestMoment for photography. seriously, i have to hold myself back sometimes from grabbing the camera.  i see them getting older, getting haircuts, filling out, lengthening out, and it is this constant reminder of impermanence.  nothing is permanent, it is always changing.  i’m not trying to fight it, i’m just trying to hold on to it as best as possible- to make the memories more vivid.  to catch the atmosphere, the feeling, not just the image.

last weekend i got to shoot with Esther again!  i’m loving getting to be her second shooter, she always finds these absolutely beautiful weddings.  if you’re unfamiliar with the term, ‘second shooter’ it means that Esther was hired by a couple (in this case, Margo and Will) and then she hired me to help her out.  it’s really helpful to have a second shooter for weddings that have difficult timelines, or late at night when you need extra help setting up lighting equipment.  oooorrrr just to share the night with someone else, instead of working solo.  i have SO much fun shooting with Esther, she is amazing to work with.  next year i have a few weddings i’m surely going to need help with and she’s my girl!  it’s nice to have someone to share the load with :)

Anyway, Margo and Will’s wedding was scrumptious… i will be making a full post later on with all their beautiful details (you should have seen the floral arrangements… they were TO DIE FOR.  the most stunning i’ve seen thus far).  but for now, here is a sneak sneak peak at their ceremony venue- Sacred Heart Cathedral in downtown tampa.  all the women in Margo’s family have been married there, for SIX GENERATIONS. talk about tradition.  and only fitting that she wore her mothers absolutely gorgeous mantilla veil… a veil i’m becoming more and more obsessed with!  and of course, if you want to see more from their wedding, head on over to Esther’s blog where she’s made a full and proper post!

PS:  the flu has hit us here!  we’ve been relegated to the bed with lots of hot tea, unlimited Mickey’s Clubhouse on playhouse disney, and chicken noodle soup.  it’s awful when you’re sick AND your babies are sick, so posting/editing/emailing/christmas card making will resume back to normal in a few days once my little ones are back on their feet. my apologies if you’ve tried to get a hold of me and haven’t had a lot of luck.  we’ll be back soon!

I know.  they seriously could not get any cuter.  these pictures were supposed to be ‘teasers’ and then i would edit the rest of the gallery  later…. BUUUTTT i may or may not have already completed the whole thing.  cate and jack cathey are seriously two of the cutest kids i’ve ever met, and also happen to be good friends of ours!  Tavish (my oldest baby) is cate’s age and just loves her.  he will pick flowers in our yard and come up to me and say “i give it to cate? i give it to cate mama?”  and one time she shared her scissors with him to cut some play-doh and he STILL TALKS ABOUT IT.  it was months ago.   and she chases him for hugs (as you can see in that picture towards the middle, where they’re running down the road) which is kind of adorable.    and Jack…. he is such a handful (literally!) he just turned one, and he weighs more than Tavish.  he’s huge.  and it’s hysterical how he lumbers about, leaning forward charging at whatever might be in front of him.  i could seriously eat him up.  the best part about this whole thing…. is that they’re going to have another baby!   Callie is pregnant (can i announce that on here?  sure hope so!) and i’m thinking it’s another boy.   she claims it’s a girl, and they are going back and forth on whether or not they are going to find out the sex before the birth.  whether or not they do is fine with me, but i call dibs on infant photography.   oh my god, i can not wait….  7 more months….

oh my…. tears. tears! Amy and Lynn’s wedding was spectacular, you can see it here, here, AND here to get the feel for the whole weekend long love celebration. the brief synopsis is Amy is one of my closest, dearest friends, and i was honored (so honored!) to play a couple of parts on her big day.  that of bridesmaid, AND photographer.  Dustin filmed the wedding with the help of myself and our second shooter, Lindsay.  between the wedding photography, the super 8mm film, the photobooth at the reception and of course taking breaks to pump since i had just recently had a baby, I absolutely could not have done it without a team, so i’m so thankful for Dustin and Lindsay.

but now, about the film:

how sweet is the letter Lynn wrote to Amy to include in the film?  she did not know about this by the way, he is always thinking of amazing ways to show his love for her.  they have a rich rich relationship, a love that i have only seen a couple of times.  With all super 8mm films, we try to choose the music very carefully, music either personal to the couple or that really exemplifies their relationship.  “slow love” we felt was so appropriate for amy and lynn…  they make a concerted effort at all levels to keep things grounded. whether that be making sure they’re both home in the evenings, going to yoga classes together, traveling to south east asia and the middle east together,  buying groceries at organic and farmer’s markets, to lynn always making Amy coffee in the morning, riding bicycles to work/school instead of driving, it is truly a slow, organic,  love.  one that evolved over the years of college and lynn studying abroad and being separated by such massive distances for so very long (years long).  and of course, the song Amie by damien rice was the song that lynn played as he proposed to her at the orpheum theatre…. and the final song i felt like celebrated their fun loving side- i can totally see amy and lynn buying everyone sweaters and teaching them how to dance and buying their parents a home in the south of france (ps… lynn speaks fluent french and lived there for a while!).

the thing that impressed me most about their ceremony (have i already talked about this?) is the fact that everyone present honestly felt like either lynn or amy was their best friend.  amy is my best friend, and Anna’s best friend, and Sadie’s best friend…. on and on and on.  that is the impact these two people play in other’s lives. it is truly amazing.

love. love. love.   :)

ps… many more super 8 films to come!  we’re knockin em down!  hope to have all weddings/films done before christmas!!!!  it may be a lofty goal… but we sure as heck are going to do our best!  we want everyone to have a merry christmas :)
