How cute are THEY?!  i love those two last pictures of Jason sliding under Maureen… right before that happened i thought “is he really going to do that? is he really going to…. HES GOING TO!”  and i just prayed i captured it appropriately!  maureen and Jason are so much fun, and they wanted their wedding to reflect their personalities as well.  yard games like corn hole (or tossy-sack) decorated the lawn outside the reception tent for guests to play during the cocktail hour and when they needed a break from dancing. Long ago brides didn’t spend money on their weddings… they borrowed everything from family members and used their own goods from home to make their day a success, and honoring that tradition, maureen asked family members and friends for help with the decor.  hundreds of Ball mason glasses covered tables with candles illuminating the tent at night.  all of the cupcake stands were also from friends and family members, and the eclectic display made everything come together as one.  at night, candle light filled the room and lit up the wooden handmade signs they made (i hear Jason had a big part in that… way to go groom!) to help guests navigate the reception and add fun bits of trivia (how far is it to dublin? minnesota?- a nod to Maureen’s Irish heritage.)

From the bride:

My mom’s side of the family is Irish, and my middle name is Murphy.  Irish music, history, toasts, jewelry have been a part of my family my whole life.  I wore a Claddagh ring (two hands holding a crowned heart that means friendship, love, and loyalty) until we were engaged.  Because of this, I really wanted to have some pieces of my heritage in the wedding.  To try to do that, we used an Irish saying on our favor tags and the Irish “cheers” Slainte as well.  There was all Celtic music being played as the prelude and some mixed in during the dinner music as well.

As for the decorations, we had such a hard time deciding what our “theme” was but we both wanted it to be fairly simple.  I had seen some blog posts about mason jars and LOVED how they looked. The mason jars were all borrowed from family and friends. The table numbers and all the signs were handmade by Jason.  And I mean handmade, he painted them all with his fingers because the brush just wasn’t working! We did cupcakes because we really wanted a piece of our life in Minneapolis to be there and the bakery is 4 blocks from where we live.  We get cupcakes from there on special occasions.  All of the cupcake platters (cake trays) were borrowed from the women in my family and Jason’s mom. We did signature drinks, also to bring in a little Minneapolis flavor.  The Big Ginger is from The Local in Minneapolis, an Irish pub and as I was telling Lisa from Spring Brook what we needed to make that, I thought, my mom is little and her favorite summer drink is Bombay Sapphire and tonic, let’s have that be a signature, too.  Another favorite detail was having our bridal party stay with us at the resort.  We’ve both been in lots of weddings and really wanted to make it as easy on everyone as we could so we had them all stay in two houses.  The first house, the Bait Shop, had a sign in it that said Clark’s Red Rock Resort the first time we looked at it and I knew right then this is where we would get married.  And the Champagne Chalet was just so beautiful!!!!

Another special detail for me was my jewelry.  I wore my great-grandmother Rasmussen’s gold bracelet (mom’s side), my Grandma Murphy’s emerald earrings, my mom’s emerald necklace and a set of diamond earrings my parents gave me two years ago.  It was really special to have those generations of jewelry at our wedding.  Also, my maid of honor, Autumn found out she was pregnant at almost the same time we got engaged.  I knew I was going to ask her to by my MOH, and she told me that her due date was August 4th!  It worked out wonderfully, Lane was born July 27th and she was so wonderful with everything, even though I’m sure that it was not easy with a newborn, a 3 yr old and a 5 yr. old!
Also, my dress.  The only people that had seen it or knew what I had chosen or what it looked like before the wedding were my mom, Lindsay and my friend Sara.  The first part of planning was so crazy and I decided that I wanted that detail to be just mine and have it be a big surprise for everyone.  It was great to hear everyone’s comments for the first time that day. :)

The best part is yet to come….  Maureen and Jason also decided to do a photobooth at their reception!  stay tuned for teasers from that wild affair… it’s a post in itself!

not that i expect every wedding i shoot to be the same, but i LOVE that the three weddings i shot in Wisconsin last month were so completely different.  each one had hired the photobooth for the reception, each one dustin and i were both filming/photographing, each one around the same time of day, each one in madison (or close by).  but they each carried their own completely different style and character.  Danielle and Erics wedding was so.much.fun.   and not that my other weddings weren’t fun, but that was the common theme throughout this wedding!  everything from the party bus, to the photobooth, to walking down the middle of state street by the capital with the bridal party clapping loudly and doing cheers to draw as MUCH attention to us as possible, to carrying around giant white balloons for photo-ops….  that is what this day was all about.   I may or may not have had a glass of champagne (per insistance from Eric… such an instigator!) on the party bus and it was oh-so-good.  hence, the reason i decided to do their ring shot with the cork.  and that picture above of the guy opening up the bottle on the party bus? yep… it was his first time.  caught on film!  enough you dirty minds!   i’m not sure he’s 18!

really though, this was the ultimate classy affair.  everything from beginning to end (as well as the mother’s of the bride and groom! floor length gowns for both of them and im still not completely conviced they weren’t sisters of the bride and groom) was absolutely beautiful.  i happened to remember my top secret ally way in madison (way back from my days in college trying to sneak into bars the backway…. shhhh) and we definitely used it to it’s full potential for some bridal party shots.

and then of course….. the photobooth.  this was the most unique one we’ve done (we’re open to ANY suggestions from any bride, btw…. you needn’t use the white backdrop if you dont want to), and it was a smash hit.  Dani made mustaches and big red lips and it was hysterical.

and of course…. Dustin and I just couldn’t resist….   hello new facebook profile pic!  God, i love my husband.  i’m pretty sure this was taken at around midnight and we were still going strong.  alternative titles for these pictures could be:  ”chest hair, who needs a sweater!”  ”button that up!” or “why, no sir.  we were decapitated from the hips up right before that shot!”

Stay tuned for the super 8mm film we did of their wedding! it’s being processed and developed as we speak!

So i just booked Ralph and Sara  for their wedding here in Florida next summer!  they are an amazing couple (with a sweetheart of a dog, Rex) and i am still shaking my head in wonderment at how our paths crossed!  if you’ll notice… the post title says “madison” engagement photography… meaning we were in wisconsin.  but their wedding is in Florida…  five minutes away from my house!

they were at a wisconsin wedding where a good friend of mine Amy Johnson (her work is un.believable.) was filming the wedding.  they happened to ask her if she knew of any photographers that could shoot their wedding in Florida.  and not just anywhere in florida, it happens to be the beautiful resort that’s just minutes away from my front door!  annndd…. as fate would have it, i was traveling back up to wisconsin in just a few days for an entire month, and we were able to meet each other over coffee at the wisconsin Union, do a little engagement session before we reconvene in florida next year!  what are the chances both of us would be in madison, and then in wesley chapel fl of all places?!

i can’t wait to shoot your wedding next year you guys! you were wonderful to work with! such an easy going, comfortable couple. so easy to photograph, so at ease with themselves and their relationship. You guys make these pictures look like it was just a walk in the park, people would never know we were battling extreme heat and humidity, mosquitos, and Rex nearly drowned in the lake thanks to that disappearing pier. i’m pretty sure he’s not going to try going after a duck again.

PS… i just polished off a chili dog at 11:30 pm.  who do i think i am? a college student?  this is not going to go well.

another one of my favorites from my trip to wisconsin!  i was afraid we were going to get rained out… but the weather held just for us!  but what’s more fun than rain? CANDY RAIN!  and two little kids to sprinkle skittles over!  bring it on rain, we dare you.

seriously though, how beautiful is this family?  and Casey, the youngest boy provided tons of laughs and kept us all on our toes!  I can not get over what an amazing big brother TJ is, you can see how the two little ones adore and look up to him.  he has all the patience in the world with them.  there was a large age difference between my older brothers and sisters, and it reminds me of how i used to (and still do!) look up to them.  and note to self: ALWAYS find a grassy hill when shooting kids.  done, done, and DONE.  now, to find grassy hills in florida…..

PS: just got my new Nikon D3S tonight!  it is sitting there, looking at me, intimidating me just DARING me to take a picture.  i’m not sure my arms can lift it up, i’m going to have to start lifting weights (or just taking pictures).  we’re going to have to make friends.  maybe if i bedazzle it?  hmmm…… i might have some puff paint…

Photography 101

August 25, 2010

this year is all about giving back.  and along with giving a wedding away for free, boudoir sessions away to cancer fighters, pet sessions away for rescued animals, and discounts for being environmentally friendly, i thought i should give something back to my fellow photographers out there!  that means YOU.  if you’ve got a camera phone, a small point and shoot, a DSLR, a video camera, a computer with a camera, ANY TYPE of device that takes a picture, this post is for you.  A lot of photographers wont tell you their “tricks” or their “secrets”,  but really, what’s that doing to the population of pictures?  it’s making the majority of them yucky.  lets share the knowledge that we have, help each other out, and raise the level of photography all over.  i know there are a lot of brides out there who cant afford to hire a professional photographer, it just isn’t a possibility.  that doesnt mean there shouldnt be pictures of your wedding- that is one of the most important days of your life.  so this post is for all those friends of the bride who have a camera and are going to capture their day.  this is for those pregnant mama’s, or new mama’s who are saving every penny so they can afford to feed, cloth, and send their babies to good schools and give them the life they deserve instead of spending it on photography.   i know, i get it.  and i want to help you out.  we dont need any of these wedding pictures floating around:

ten years from now you’re not going to think that picture is that pretty,  and photos of your wedding day are not something you want to mess up.  Sorry linds!  i took one of her beautiful wedding photos and totally just trashed it in photoshop. I’m hoping she’ll be ok with me sacrificing her to the photography gods. a steadfast rule: white vingnettes are NEVER (i repeat!) never a good idea. as well as any other type of shapes (heart, diamond, oval) that you want to put around your photographs.

there is so much photography out there these days that makes me cringe.  and a lot of it has to do with the revolution of the digital age.  it seems anyone can now grab a photo filter, throw it on their picture, and BAM- sepia toned picture.  or how about this super cool thing! lets turn the entire picture black and white except for one area of color … say… in the eyes.  no. i beg you.  please dont.

and let me tell you why.

remember (this is to my ladies) when you first started wearing make-up?  you wanted people to know you were wearing makeup.  2cm thick liquid eyeliner does NOT look natural.  and it very very very rarely enhances the natural beauty of an eye.  but people do it, because they think that maybe by outlining the eye intensely, it will help.  I’m only using that example because i WAS that girl.  and then someone told me something that changed my entire view of make-up: you want the viewer to think that you are NATURALLY that beautiful.  the make-up should enhance your natural features, not overpower or hide them. aka… they dont want to even know you’re wearing make-up.  there are exceptions to this rule (like all rules) of course…  i wont lie and tell you i dont love a good deep red lip every once in a while…. but that’s what it is. every.once.in.a.while.

and that, my dear photographers, is the exact same theory you should apply to your photographs.  filters, actions, re-touching, ANY type of post processing should be done with careful thought.  ask yourself WHY are you doing what you’re doing?  what are you trying to say?  why do you want to make the eyes a different color?  because you want to draw attention to them?  great answer!  wrong way of going about doing it.  it looks un-natural and… well…. scary.

YIKES!   need i say more?

but i haven’t solved your dilema.  you want your pictures to be “cool”.  to be “different”, and, you still want to draw attention to the eyes.   well, lets try composing so that the eyes are naturally the main focal point. get in close to your subject.  make sure the eyes are in focus.  if you cant get in close, the crop down close.  make sure there is nothing extraneous going on in the background that would take away from where you want the attention (the eyes!).

where did you first look when you saw this photograph?  the eyes!  and it pretty much stayed there because… well… there’s not a lot else going on in this picture.  so it is sucessfull, and hey (!) i didnt even have to do any black and white/ selective color work!  yay for no work!  i like doing non-work things with my time, how about you?

it is also successful because it is properly exposed. meaning, there are very little (optimally, there would be no) clipping of highlights or shadows.  when you clip a highlight or shadow it means it is 100% white, or 100% black- there is no detail in that area.  properly exposing your picture is the number 1 rule to a decent photograph, along with getting what you want in focus actually in focus.  if you’re not sure how to do this, definitely go read your camera manual.  i know it may sound boring but it will shed some serious light on this subject (haha! no pun intended! i’m just that funny). do my photographs clip the highlights and shadows? sure. some of them do. sometimes you just can’t get around it without some SERIOUS time and effort. but, lets try to do it as very little as possible.  Since i know most people dont own a DSLR, and just have a point and shoot (or camera phone) i’m going to use an example i took with my point and shoot.

this was a quick snapshot i took of my son, Tavish when he was just a couple months old.  it’s not meant to be a professional photograph, it’s just a quick snapshot.  but, lets say i wanted to try to make it better.  often times people want to make their photographs “pop” and they run right to the contrast tool to make it happen.  let me show you why you shouldnt do this:

see all that white area and black area?  it’s clipping.  meaning  it kind of looks like there is a gapping hole where all that white is. it’s empty and it makes people feel uncomfortable when there are holes in your picture, or where they cant tell where the edge is.  and see the color distortion in the face?  that shocking yellow is not a pleasant skin tone.  imagine if you woke up tomorrow morning, looked at your reflection in the mirror and saw it was bright yellow like that.  would you freak or be like “wow… i look amazing today. i really ‘pop’ “.   you’d freak? yeah, that’s what i thought.

so all the red areas are holes in your photograph, and the blue areas are the parts where it is just a black ink blob.  not so good.  you’ve now ruined any of the detail in those areas, and we love detail! having detail doesnt mean that your photo has to be all grayed out and washed out.  actually, it means the opposite. the more detail you have, the more color range you can have. so what should you do? there are a lot of advanced things you can do, but since we’re keeping this 101, here’s a quick super easy fix.  if you have photoshop, you can use the dodge and burn tool.  BAM! detail, AND pop, AND no clipping!  yes! you’re totally on your way.  you are now better than 70% of photographers out there by fixing this one thing about your pictures.

so lets say you want to make a black and white picture from a color picture.  i could get into really advanced techniques of black and white conversion stuff, because it is a bit trickier than it seems.  but as a rule of thumb, in it’s most simple and basic form, i take my color picture, desaturate it to black and white, add a little more contrast, and then give it a tiny warming filter.  WHOA!  a lot to take in?  not really. check it out. This is my straight up black and white picture from that silly little snapshot from before.  it’s a bit… “cool” (as in color tone) for me.  i dont like my black and white prints looking blueish because it’s just not a very natural skin color.  unless you’re at blue man group.  then it’s cool by me.

so lets add a little filter (image, adjustments, photo filter, warming filter at 10% strength) to help make this baby seem a bit more alive and healthy.

holy.man.  you’ve just learned black and white toning… a little tiny detail that gives your black and white photos depth, warmth, and a human quality to them.   you are now better than 90% of the photographers out there.  heck, you dont even need me!  i am putting myself out of business as we speak.

but dont get carried away!  just because your photo editing software CAN do things, it doesnt mean it should.  just because you HAVE photo filters, doesnt mean you should use them at full strength (or even at all).  check this one out:

YIIIIKKKKEEESSS!!!!!  here’s that same exact photo filter at like, 80% strength.  that’s not even full power!  i couldnt bare the sight of it, and i didnt want to torture you too much with it at full strength. it’s burning my eyes.  just because photoshop (or whatever software you’re using) allows you to do this type of thing doesn’t mean this is what it was meant for.  Photoshop developers give you all the resources you could ever possibly use, but its up to you, the photographer and image editor to use sense and moderation in how you use them.

in this age, when everyone has a camera, and anyone can edit their photos in image software, we have to be mindful about the filters we put on our photographs.  just because it’s cool and different doesnt mean it makes a good picture that people are going to like looking at.  being creative, and making creative photography isn’t about what wild filter you can put on your picture.  it’s about how you compose the picture. the care you take in exposure. the message you’re trying to get across. the story you’re telling. the emotion you’re conveying. the interesting lighting situation (window light? filtered light? sunset? shooting when the sun is coming through the blinds and creating pattern and texture?).

lastly, if you really do want your pictures to have a vintage look, and you’re not a photoshop expert, why not actually take pictures with a vintage style camera with… (GASP!) film? there are so many cool things out there that are artistic and authentic. this isn’t a photoshop trick, this is the real deal hollyfield.  it was taken with a Holga camera with medium format color film.  you can do this.  and the best part is…. no photoshop.  no editing time.  just pure and simple.

so trust yourself, have confidence in your image and dont cake too much make-up on it.  if you originally thought it was beautiful, it probably is….  just the way it is.

love yourself, love your photography.

look! it’s almost like we’re saving the world!  :)

what can i say?  seeing this makes me want to be pregnant again!  how incredibly beautiful is she?!  this was (shhhh….) my favorite photo shoot i did in our whirlwind trip up to WI this past month.  i can’t believe we made it out alive! Dustin and I and both our little babies drove the long haul up to wisconsin, stopping in Illinois for a boudoir shoot, and then pushed the rest of the way up north.  we had so much equipment for so many different weddings and shoots it would have been silly of us to try and fly with all of that.  but let me tell you, there were definite points along the way where i imagined sitting on an airplane having someone serve me peanuts and sodas in little glasses instead of sitting squished between two car seats entertaining one, entertaining the other, and back to the first one.  i could tell you how many times we sang “wheels on the bus” but i think you can probably already imagine.   so aside from the craziness of being homeless for an entire month, there were some amazing amazing highlights to this trip, this being one of my favorites.  not only because Ali is radiantly beautiful and i think Dusty will make just about the best dad in the world (apart from my dustin, who IS the greatest dad in the world, hands down, and he’s a fairly good husband and business partner as well…) but because i’ve known her for so very long.  since 8th grade to be exact.  She was the reason i survived my very first day of 8th grade as “the new girl” in my school.  Fun fact= ali can hold me above her head… with her hands.  we were both cheerleaders (i know!) in high school and she was my base.  i liken her to the strongest women i know.  if anyone can birth a child, it’s going to be that girl.  dont let her fool you with her fairy-like features.

and now, i’ve been a bridesmaid AND a photographer at her wedding, shot her maternity pictures, and am planning a trip back up to make it for her birth.  we are crossing our fingers so so so tightly that i can hop a plane once the contractions start and make it to Madison before that baby comes out.  i’m secretly praying for a long labor, but dont tell Ali that.   I’m also praying for no false labor, because that would not be very funny at all.

ps- that awesome chair?  we found it along side the road on our way to the field.  what a find! i love serendipitous moments like that, and for people who dont think my visions are crazy.

so, stay tuned for more ali and dusty + bambino pictures in the near future!!!  i can not wait.

my cell phone is with me at all times now, just waiting for that call!

hello martha!

August 19, 2010

as i’m sure you’ve heard  by now, we’ve been featured on Martha Stewart Weddings! Evan and Mark’s wedding from last October was truly Martha worthy, and I’m so happy to announce that she thought so too!  I could go on and on about all the amazing, thoughtfully crafted and carried out details, but the actual posts can say it so much better than i can.  Go over to the site and check it out!   There are three places we’re featured: the main website, and then here on the blog where you can watch the super 8mm film of the day, and then again on the blog here where you can see some of the engagement pics we did of them before the big day, as well as a sweet picture of Dustin and I filming!  We were so happy to team up with all the amazing wedding vendors to make Evan and Mark’s day a reality- we especially loved Missy McLamb’s beautiful film photographs of the day.  We’re so happy to see that there are still people out there creating fine art film images of weddings with vintage cameras.  we’re not alone!
