Sometimes, i come up with wild artsy ideas for engagement sessions. and sometimes, i can find willing clients to go along with my wild artsy ideas, and trust that the photographer they’ve hired hasn’t lost her marbles. Luckily, that couple was Challen and her wonderful fiance, John.  we had scheduled a regular engagement session, and then i emailed her saying “hey… i have an additional idea, if you want something truly original and fun.  but you’ve got to trust me.  all i’m going to say is that you’ll need your snorkle gear, but you wont be getting wet.”   and she did… and so did John.

I was inspired by how they got engaged… while snorkeling and clamming.  John had place her ring inside a clam shell, and while they were hunting for good clams, he pulled it out and surprised her underwater. i thought it would be cute to re-enact the scene in a stop motion video!  this was our first attempt at stop motion, and we’ve learned a lot since, and can’t wait to add this to our normal repertoire of photography services we offer!

maternity series week 23

January 25, 2010

I asked Tavish if he wanted to kiss my tummy, and he kept giving it kiss after kiss after kiss and long sweet hugs with his eyes closed.  what a little lover.  i think he’s going to be a great big brother.

maternity series, week 22

January 19, 2010

Ah, yes, week 22.   i don’t know what it was about today, but i just did not have patience to sit in front of the camera.  this has been a great exercise for me because i can not STAND to have my photograph taken.  it’s something that’s developed within the past 8 years or so… it’s not that i think i look bad in front of the camera… it’s just that it’s… awkward.  and i’m so much more comfortable being behind the camera that it makes me remember how hard it is to be on the other side.

baby bottoms and super 8mm

January 18, 2010

Super 8mm films have this amazing timeless quality to them that we adore here at SugarLeaf.  There is such a growing market for vintage films for weddings, but we think they’re just as great for family sessions.  I’ve always thought little naked babies at the beach were quite possibly the best things in the world, so as a forewarning, this film does have a little bit of nudity in it (on our 1 year old son’s behalf).

on this day, Tavish learned how to blow kisses (as you can see in my excitement halfway through the film), and even 6 months later, he’s still doing it all the time.  he’s a heart melter, what can I  say!

that salad with the peanut dressing? yeah, i’ve definitely been craving it all week now.  and the cake.

but check out the guests, aren’t they fantastic?  WILD dancing, uninhibited.  maybe it was the below 30 degree weather that got their blood pumping, but it was so much fun to capture it all!

maternity series week 21

January 11, 2010

Feeling FANTASTIC this week.  I shot a wedding this weekend, and i got some funny looks when i was standing on chairs to get good angles.  i’m already brainstorming how i’m going to tell the guests at my April 24th wedding (the last wedding i shoot before i officially take my maternity leave may-july),  that although i am 8 months pregnant, i’m still going to be standing on chairs to get good shots.  sorry, wont compromise the photography! promise i’ll be safe :)

and here are the outtakes:

is there really anything more beautiful?

i’ll be posting more from this wedding i shot over the weekend soon.  it snowed.  in florida.  i was confused… i thought i stopped shooting wisconsin winter weddings?  :)

luckily everyone had an amazing attitude, and it just fueled guests’ desire to get their booties on the dance floor to get warm.

Congrats again guys!

Love these two shots together.  what a little frog she was!

hello Emma!

January 9, 2010

she was just as cute in person!  i love shooting infants, because it is the least stressful and formal photo shoot i do.  we have no time frame.  we let the baby run the show, and we’re just along for the ride.  it’s such a fun experience, and low stress on mom and dad too.  if i find out you’ve cleaned your house just for me, you’ll be in trouble. i know exactly how it is with a new infant at home… things just don’t get done, especially if they are in the organization department.  i don’t need a clean house to get great shots.  just open minded parents “you want me to hold her HOW?”  and probably some paper towels on hand….  naked baby shots can get… well… messy.

poor little Emma couldn’t hold it any longer and made  a little piddle on her daddy while he was posing with her.  and what did i do?  what any parent would do.  drop the camera and cup my hands.  yeah, i definitely cupped my hands to catch her piddle.   i laugh now that i’m looking back on it… i guess the parental instinct was stronger than the photographer one.

so rest assured… if your child piddles, i wont be offended.

till next time,

Lex
